WILLIAM CHOATE Sep 2011 - There are two William Choate's on the 1870 Census for Austin Bulger Choate of Fentress County, Tennessee. I do believe that the 2nd William Choate should have been listed as a grandson (for clarity purposes).1850 Census in Jackson County, Tennessee we see husband Austin, wife Polly, John (son), Austin (son), Margaret (daughter), William (son) and Christopher (son). I believe that this is why many people have included the second William as another son of Austin Bulger and Mary Ann Polly.
1860 Census in Putnam County, Tennessee we see husband Austin, wife Mary, and children, Josephine {10 years old -I still havent figured out her story}, John (son), Austin (son), Margaret (daughter), William (son), Christopher (son), Russell {who is Edward Russell} (son), Naomi (daughter) and Lewis (son).

***now in 1862 John Choate (the oldest son) marries Sarah Jane Stewart, they have at least three children, two of which pass away as infants. They have a son named William born in October of 1863. Sarah dies in 1868. On the 1870 Census where we see John Choate whose occupation is listed as physican, he is listed alone. [[ Year: 1870; Census Place: District 3, Fentress, Tennessee; Roll: M593_1526; Page: 541B; Image: 721; Family History Library Film: 553025]] We know that William dies in 1876. Four years after Sarah passes away, John remarries to Clarinda Fatima Wells {who subsequently passes away in 1897}. So this child William, is never shown as a son of John Choate, (on a Census), however we do know that he IS the son of John Choate. I suspect that John asked his mother to care for his son, after Sarah dies. Which explains why this second William, shows up on the family census of Austin Bulger Choate and Mary Ann Polly Barnes Choate and not with his father John (who is on a separate census****)

- CHILDREN OF JOHN CHOATE 1900 Sep 2011 - I realized when I was trying to figure out what happened to the Caleb, Isaac, Silas, Lois, Anna and Rufus Choate when their father, Dr. John Choate dies, that I hadnt followed them from start to finish. So I set out to find out what DID happen to them. There was an obituary on 3 May 1900 for Dr. John Choate that said that his son Caleb was married, and that his sons Isaac and Silas were of age and would be taking care of themselves. It also stated that his daughters Lois and Anna would be living with their Aunt, Mrs. John Story in Monroe and that the little boy (referring to Rufus) would be going to live with his brother Caleb. So I went looking for Rufus. I knew that he was not on the 1900 Census with Caleb, so I went looking for Mrs. John Story in Monroe. I had no idea where Monroe was, so I went looking for a possible Monroe. Tennessee and found it in Pickett County, Tennessee. I then did a search for John Story, 1900 Census in Pickett County and sure enough, I located the three children living with John Story, Irene Story and their son Henry O. Story. Now I knew that Clarinda Fatima (nee Wells) Choate and Irene (nee Wells) Story were sisters and wanted to link them together on the FindAGrave website, but had to have parents in order to do that. I happened across a census where it listed Clarinda and Irene with their parents Anderson Wells and Nancy E. Wells. So from there, I went back to the FindAGrave website, and found Nancy Ellen (nee Wolford) Wells, and on her Memorial Page it gave information that her husband Anderson had taken sick while on a trip to Texas to see his daughter and had passed away. So he was buried there in Texas, however, that his grave and headstone had been vandalized years later. When Nancy died in Texas, the headstone of Anderson Wells was taken to the cemetery where Nancy is buried and placed beside hers. So Anderson Wells has two Memorial pages on FindAGrave - one for his physical remains and the other to show that his headstone is with his wife. What a journey of information this was. In the end, I was able to email the creators of each of the four Memorial pages, to request that the parents be added to the daughters and thus, linking Clarinda Fatima Wells Choate and her sister Irene Elizabeth Wells Story. Now I want to know what happened to Silas who happened to die just a year later. Caleb later went on to become a lawyer and Isaac went to Oklahoma and later on to California and died there and is buried in Inglewood Cemetery with his wife Myrtle. California Death index gives his mothers maiden name "Wells". So that confirmed to me that this was the correct Isaac Choate. To make sure, I called Inglewood Cemetery and they were able to tell me that Isaac is buried with his wife Myrtle May William Choate.

- In researching more about Anna Choate and where she went in her life, I discovered that when she got married to Amos, she also became the step-mother to his four children by his previous wife Roxie Elizabeth Crabtree who had died in 1910. So when i first found Anna on the 1920 Census, and found that there were teenagers, that I knew were not hers, I went looking on the internet and found that the Crabtree history that was written included information that indeed, Amos had been married before and that his beloved wife had died. I also found on Ancestry.com that she is buried in Johnson Cemetery, in Stone, Tennessee.

I went on a quest to locate where Lois and James Charles Reeves might be buried. I first did a search for Lois Reeves with no luck. I then did a search for James Charles Reeves and found a website done by Tammy Szatkowski . http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/z/a/Tammy-Szatkowski-reeves-TX/index.html
and there I found the headstones of both James Charles Reeves and his wife Lois Choate Reeves. From here, I was able to ascertain where Lois and James were buried. John L. Clark Memorial Cemetery which shows that it IS in Stone, Tennessee.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 - Determined to find the graves of Caleb S. Choate and Lee Vernie Norrod, I set out investigating their children and researching them. I found myself doing searches for Livius Choate, their infant that died in 1910 and I was able to find where someone had listed the cemetery as Elk City Cemetery. After a few attempts, I finally located the cemetery which is now called Fairlawn Cemetery. I found a website for Fairlawn Cemetery in Elk City, Oklahoma http://www.elkcity.com/cemetery/ and at there website I simply did a last name search for Choate and was able to find Caleb, Lee Vernie and Livius Choate. I was overjoyed to pull a family together and make sure that these three had their own findagrave memorial pages.

Monday, September 26, 2011 - I got brave today, and emailed someone, who I thought might be related to Caleb Choate and to my amazement, I got a positive response. Not only has a connection within the branches of the tree has been made, but additional documents shared. In fact, the very original document that I had received from my mother in law Emma Lee Smith-Wright-Schuster-Ridgeway-Emmot over 25 years ago, which had misplaced while moving, came once again to me. I was overjoyed. This document being entitled "Genealogical Records of The Choate Family and Related Families" and revised on January 1966. This individual that emailed it to me told me that Orlean Choate was the one that compiled the records and also that Orlean had died while searching for headstones in a cemetery. Thanks go to Brian, for sending that history to me.

Thursday September 29, 2011 - Tonight, I open up an email with the subject line as "ghosts" and it was from someone in the Elk City, Oklahoma area, (who is not related to the Choates), who saw my posting on findagrave. I had made a request for a picture and this person emailed me and asked if I would like the obituaries of these same individuals that I had requested. Within a day, they had gone to the library in Elk City and copied the obituary into her i-phone and emailed them to me. Their subject line - was Choates.. however the cell phone didnt recognize that word and it translated it to "Ghosts." Here is an excerpt of the email I received from this really terrific individual. "Too funny! I had no idea that my iphone auto corrected Choates to Ghosts in the subject line. I am not related to the Choate family. I saw your comment about finally finding them in Elk City and thought you might be interested in obits if they were available. I stopped by the library yesterday and found several for Choates. They are not in a good format for scanning so I will retype them and send either later this evening or in the morning. The ones I picked up were Lee Vernia, Caleb, Livius, and Lucian. There were also Ollin James, Ollin Newton, Raymond and Albert J. They don't mention any connection to your Choates, but I thought they might be interested anyway." One the credits tab of this site (c) will be used to signify reference for this individuals contribution.

Saturday, Oct 1, 2011 - This morning I received an email from a contributor on Find-a-Grave, who had gone out to Memorial Park Cemetery to obtain a photograph (as per my request ) of the headstone for Lillian Choate Dell. This contributor talked to the cemetery office and they informed them, of the location of the grave, but that no headstone had been placed.

Saturday, Oct 1, 2011 - On a genealogical search, I happened across a lovely picture of Olive Eleanor Bailey (mother of Dorothy Eunice Meeker Choate), and wrote to the submitter of the photograph, asking permission to use it on my ancestry page and this site. This is the response I got back.
"Thanks. Sure, you can use the picture. The picture of Nellie was given to me by her granddaughter Pat. Nellie was my grandmother's sister. Their brothers Jim and Bill Bailey traveled all over the world in their jobs with J. I. Case. Nellie was looking forward to when her children would be old enough for HER to travel. But she died from complications of appendicitis before she had the chance. According to the family letters, Nellie was the most loved in the Bailey family. She was sweet and kind but knew her own mind. When she married in 1910 - her husband, Grover, said "In my family the women do the milking" and Nellie replied "Well, in MY family they DON'T". Nellie's daughter Dorothy married Orlean Choate. So their daughters are (what?) 2nd cousins to me? More Bailey pictures on the Bailey page (including Nellie's family about 5 years before she died). http://www.hollingsworthassociates.com/Bailey.htm Nellie was not buried in the family cemetery (Olive Hill) because her husband didn't think a poor country farm cemetery was the place. But there's a little information about Nellie's family on the Olive Hill site: http://www.olivehill.org/hist_33Meeker.htm I try to be careful not to publish info about living persons so the information on-line is limited. Some day I'll finish copying the OBITs and such from the Olive Hill site to Find-A-Grave. Hope this helps, Donna Hocking"

Saturday 1 Oct 2011 - I was working on Isaac and Myrtle May Williams Choate family today, and could not find any information on where their daughter Irene might be buried. I had a hunch to look in Inglewood Park Cemetery, since her father and mother were buried there. I'm glad that this cemetery has its own genealogy database and allows you to search for certain individuals online, and sure enough, I located both Irene Choate Dawson and her husband Waltham L. Dawson.

Tuesday 11 Oct 2011 - As I've been working on completing the updates on the descendants of John Choate, I've been blessed by receiving emails from other family members - those grandchildren of Caleb Choate. Its been really nice to be able to send out the website to them so that they can become a part of the work in progress. One of the amazing things that I found today, was when I started working on Bernard Gilbert Crabtree and trying to trace him. I discovered that he had enlisted into the military during WWII and had actually served in the 82nd Airborne. Now this elite division of our military was part of the greatest battles of WWII. A book was written by Cornelius Ryan entitled "A Bridge Too Far: The Classic History of the Greatest Airborne Battle of World War II" copywritten in 1974. As the story unfolds within its pages, we get a sense of history and appreciation for what our serviceman/women have done to preservce this countries freedom. To know that many of our family were a part is an honor, and to know that at least one Bernard Gilbert Crabtree was one of the "Soldiers of" A Bridge Too Far is humbling. He is named in the section entitled "Soldiers & Civilians of "A Bridge Too Far" *What They Do Now*" The book is fortunately available to be read on ebooks. Good Reading!

Thursday, 13 October 2011 - I continue to be amazed. What an incredible blessing it is to make family connections and be able to bring this update to those who appreciate it. Today, I was sent some wonderful pictures of Imogene Winifred Dell Hatosky and I learned a little about her as well. She was an amazing cook, she was warm, she made all around her feel warm and loved and most of all, she brought into this world a lovely daughter who I got the chance to talk to. What a blessing this work is. Sometimes I remember some beautiful scriptures and theres one that just sticks out in my mind right now. "This is my work and my glory to bring to pass the eternal life and immortality of man". As much as this is my personal project, its not that I do it for only me, but for the family as a whole. To somehow bring to the forefront of our minds, our ancestors, and remember that if it weren't for them, we wouldn't be here. My thanks to Marie today for sharing the pictures of her mother.

Thursday 27 October 2011 - As of this writing, I am trying to locate all 8 of the children that Martha E. Hart Choate had (as stated in the 1900 census). In this census, she states that she was the mother of 8 children, but that only 5 of them were still living. In attempting to make sense of the children of Austin Choate and Martha Ellen Hart, (as per the Genealogical Records of The Choate Family and Related Families) I have found records from www.findagrave.com , that show that they had 5 children being Easter Alice Choate, Rebecca Jane Choate, Rufus Choate, Jasper C. Choate and Clark Choate. On the 1880 Census for the family we see Austin Choate age 38, Martha E. age 34, Beckey age 13; Easter A. age 12; Rufus age 9, and Jasper age 1 month old. By the 1900 census, we see that only Clark and Rufus remains living with their mother. Austin having passed in February of the 1900 census year. I am unable to locate the family on an 1870 census as of yet. The 1900 census does indicate that Martha was the mother of 8 children and that 5 of them were still living.

Tuesday, 19 March 2013 - Received a wonderful email from Brian Dell - Re: John Thomas Dell. Details about him are not all correct. Here are some details: John Thomas Dell, b 1-20-1890 Fayetteville, AR; d 2-6-2954 in Oklahoma City. He came to Oklahoma City before 1915, went to business college. All before my time, of course. Brian
I am more than happy to correct the record, so I added the information Brian provided to me.

13 July 2014 - Received an inquiry regarding Margaret Ann Choate - it reads as follows: My reply to her follows below
Dear Beckie,Hi! My name is Sherrie Lambert. I've been working on some family history on familysearch.org. I have been researching Margaret A. Greer and came across another name: Mary Shoult Choate (. On Mary's name I have noticed that you have attached some information that doesn't seem to match Mary, but rather Margaret. Looking at the information for Mary, it appears that her name has been listed for a number of people and much of the information does not match up. Could you please tell me where you go the information for Margaret? She is in my family line being the second wife of John C. Greer. I have also noticed you added a marriage date for John C. Greer and Mary Shoult Choate. Do you have more information/records on that? According to my research and they information you have posted, I do feel that Margaret maiden name is Choat[e], but I don't feel that she is Mary Shoult Choate. Youre help would be much appreciated!
I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Sherrie Lambert
Hello Sherrie
Thank you for emailing me.
I have been working a very long time on the Choate genealogy and for a long time (in 2011) i put together a Choate website.
I live in Maryland and have access to the early Choate records which can be found at the Maryland State Archives as well as the Maryland Historical Society.
I once was given the opportunity to purchase the book entitled "Choates of the South" by Irene Choate Williams but at the time, I was raising four youngsters and didnt quite have the extra money in which to purchase it. But that book is located in many libraries across the country.
Here is my website - which may prove to be very helpful to you - please know that it is an ongoing work in progress.
http://choatesoftennessee.weebly.com/
and this direct link of my website should take you directly to the Margaret Ann Choate Greer you are asking about. She is buried in Frogg Chapel Cemetery. http://choatesoftennessee.weebly.com/margaret-ann-greer-family.html
The word Shoult that you have with her name is probably and most likely NOT the same woman. Choate name has been spelled in so many different ways such as Chote, Choat, Shote, Shoult, and probably several others, but it has been accepted as Choate.
Please read through my website and you should learn that I have been very careful as to checking the validity of records and i check, double check and sometimes triple check my work.
I have also had the awesome encounters with other living descendants of the Choates - My kids father, is a direct descendant of Alma Choate. So they are only four generations from being a Choate.
Have you ever seen the family genealogy that was written by one Orlean Choate, I believe it was written in 1966.
Again, thank you for writing and keep in touch, any additional help I can give, just ask.

I am not finished with Jessie Chambers Choate Tidwell but I thought I would send this out for now.
There is no doubt that Jessie Chambers was born on December 17, 1895. The question is where was she born.
a. The 1900 census shows her in Hunt Co., Tx.
b. On Ida Faye Choate’s birth certificate it says Jessie was born in Cedar Hill, Tx. Dallas & Ellis Co.’s.
c. On Wayne Hampton Choate’s birth certificate it says Jessie was born in “Cado.” I am assuming that means Caddo, Tx. Stephens Co.
d. On Jessie’s death certificate it just says she was born in Texas.
For now I am going with Caddo, Tx. Stephens Co. but if I find something better or I change my mind, I will go with the new information or Hunt Co., Tx. where she was in 1900.
There is no doubt that her father was Charles "Charley" Chambers but he is a tough one to track down. I found him in Hill Co., Tx. in 1860 and I did not find him again until 1910 in Tarrant Co., Tx. It appears that he married a widow by the name of Sarah "Sallie" M. Thompson Johnson. It appears that they married circa 1894 but in 1900 she is Hunt Co., Tx. with Jessie Chambers and a bunch of Johnson kids and a married Johnson daughter but with no Charles "Charley" Chambers around but she is listed simply as “Sarah Chambers.” Very interesting and confusing.
By 1910, Charles "Charley" Chambers is with Sarah "Sallie" M. Thompson Chamber and Jessie Chambers and three male Johnson step-sons in Tarrant Co., Tx.
It appears that Jessie Chambers married Wade Hampton Choate circa 1913 and probably in Tarrant Co., Tx. because Ida Faye Choate was born on April 11, 1914 in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co. and then on April 22, 1918 Opal Gladys Choate was born in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co.
Jessie Chambers Choate’s mother, Sarah “Sallie” Thompson Johnson Chambers, dies on November 05, 1918 in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co.
In 1920, Wade Hampton Choate and Jessie Chambers Choate are living in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co. with just Ida Faye Choate and Opal Gladys Choate.
Freda Choate was born on February 25, 1921 in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co.
Jessie Doris Choate was born on September 08, 1924 in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co.
Carlie Emly Choate was born on December 14, 1925 in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co.
And the sixth child and last child and the only boy, Wade Hampton Choate Jr. was born on December 20, 1928 in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co.
By 1930, Wade Hampton Choate Sr., Jessie Chambers Choate and Ida Faye, Opal Gladys, Freda, Jessie Doris and Wade Hampton Choate Jr. are still in the household but they have moved from Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co. to Wise Co., Tx.
Now it gets messy.
Wise Co., Texas Cass Co., Tx.
For awhile, I thought that Wade Hampton Choate Sr. deserted his family after 1930 and Jessie Chambers Choate had married up with a James Columbus Tidwell. After looking at the 1930 census for both Wade and Jessie and James Columbus Tidwell, it appears that James Columbus Tidwell was married in 1930 to a lady named Jessie. They were living in Cass Co., Tx. while Wade Sr. and Jessie were living in Wise Co., Tx.
James Columbus Tidwell died on November 13, 1937 in Hughes Springs, Tx. Cass Co. and in 1940 Jessie Chambers Choate is listed as Jessie Chambers Choate and living in Ft. Worth, Tx. Tarrant Co. with Freda Choate, Jessie Doris Choate, Carlie Emly Choate and Wade Hampton Choate Jr. and listed as married but no Wade Hampton Choate Sr. is in the household.
Right now, I need to find Wade Hampton Choate Sr. in 1940. Also, I would like to know who this male Tidwell is that gave Jessie the name of Jessie Chambers Choate Tidwell.
For the time being since Jessie is listed as “Jessie Choate Tidwell” on her D.C., I have given her this name in the FAG memorial you made and generously gave to me.
Given: Jessie
Middle: Choate
Maiden: Chambers
Married Name Tidwell
All of this is subject to change if I can find any more information. Right now I have hit a brick wall but I am satisfied that I have given a good account of Jessie’s life in this email and so far in the FAG memorial.
I welcome any help or comments that can help me out more. I reserve the right to not use anything given to me unless it has documentation with it and is not just some story told by somebody to somebody.
I have laid out below all my information starting with 1860 at the top and proceeding into the future.
I have added stuff about Jessie and Wade’s kids, their deaths, Jessie’s FAG memorial, info. on James Columbus Tidwell and maybe even more.
Hopefully it will be easily to follow but if not just ask and I will see if I can help out.
All the best and God Bless,
jim (James Turner Harris – FAG member #47374854
